DISASTER RELIEF --
Weather-related disasters hit US Recently, several U.S. weather-related disasters have claimed lives, displaced families and caused massive destruction to homes, businesses and farmland. LWR joins you in prayerful concern following the Southeast U.S. tornadoes (April 27, 2011), Mississippi River flooding (May 19, 2011) and the Midwest tornadoes, including the deadly tornado that struck Joplin, Mo. (May 22, 2011).
Our friends at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Domestic Disaster Response, The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod (LCMS) World Relief and Human Care, and Lutheran Disaster Response are actively responding to these and other U.S. disasters. By special request from International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), a longtime partner in distributing LWR Quilts and Kits overseas, Lutheran World Relief provided a small supply of School Kits and Quilts to supplement of other relief supplies sent to the affected areas in Alabama as part of IOCC's emergency response. But did you know that even the way in which you support our ministry should be shaped by stewardship decisions? Many of our contributors-including, perhaps, you-could significantly reduce the "cost" of supporting our work if they were to contribute appreciated assets rather than cash. IRS regulations allow donors to claim as an income tax deduction the full market value of appreciated stock if the stock is transferred directly to Lutheran World Relief. In addition, you avoid all capital gains tax on the stock's increase in value.* Please consult your financial planner or tax advisor who can assist you in evaluating the tax advantages available to you when making a donation of appreciated securities.
